They captured dozens of wild foxes and kept them in cages for a while until they determined which ones were most comfortable having people in their presence - assuming that the pups of wolves that scavenged ancient humans' garbage dumps were those that most likely were captured and led to dogs. The foxes most comfortable were kept and bred. By the third generation the foxes were developing spotted coats, wagged their tails when happy, and interacted with humans much like dogs.
