2Far ★ Posted February 14, 2019 Share #11 Posted February 14, 2019 Well, a "couple" is two (duh!) A "few" is 3-4. "Several" is > than 5-ish A "plethora" is prolly about equal to "several" as long as you don't use a decimal point. A "Crapton" is "Several" ^ a 'Few" power A "bazzilion" is a "crapton" ^ "several" power Roughly

A plethora is nearly unending in a practical sense, but finite otherwise. In "a plethora of options", all the practical options are good and it comes more from a can't-go-wrong perspective as opposed to crapton, where practicality doesn't enter into the equation. If you mean 4 or 5, say 4 or 5. Six can also be a half-dozen.

I think "few" is more relative to the total, while several is more "fixed". Like, for a Yankees-Mets baseball game, you could say there were a "few Mets fans, but mostly it was Yankees fans", and that "few" would be way more than three. But "several" wouldn't work as well in that case - or would at least seem to denote fewer than folks than "few" meant.

When talking actual quantities, several and a few equal three, any other answer is wrong. "A few more than three" would be 6. A few more than ten is a baker's dozen. Same with several. Loosely, though, asking a few questions is inaccurate, because you know nobody stops at three. So in vague situations, "few" can mean more than three, but only when you are determined to lie about something. It is what it is.
