sheep_herder ★ Posted February 21, 2019 Share #1 Posted February 21, 2019 PC was hit with the 3 1/2 year old MicroSoft scam that locked up my computer. However, I had gotten the 1-year Geek Squad contract through Best Buy when I bought the 15" MacBook Pro in September, and all of my computers are covered under the policy. I called the Geek Squad, and the fellow unlocked the computer and then another check it for viruses, updates, etc. I am glad I bought the contract, as I've already reaped more in benefits than the contract cost.?

Rebooting the machine, which they warned not to do, did not help, as all the messages returned and computer was still locked upon reboot.

I've gotten those on porn sites, but hard to imagine that would be something your wife would encounter.

Laugh, but I asked her what she was doing when it happened. She indicated she was checking email. I am just happy the problem is solved. Here is some information from a Google search. Road Runner Posted February 21, 2019 Share #11 Posted February 21, 2019 I've had similar experiences on several occasions. I was always able to get rid of it by shutting down and restarting. I then delete all cookies and temp files, just to be sure. Sometimes, you can use Task Manager to kill those types of screens. Not sure if that works on the Microsoft scam popup. I also get regular phone calls (I got one today) from "Microsoft" telling me that they owe me some money and that I need to call them right away. I don't understand how this stuff persists for so long. Why don't the Feds track these people down?
