late Posted February 26, 2019 Share #1 Posted February 26, 2019 "But how do you really know if the chicken you are eating spent its life happily pecking for corn or if your blackberries were grown locally and are pesticide free? Simple. Put a tracking device on it. It's not as absurd as it sounds, says Robyn Metcalfe, a food historian who teaches at the University of Texas at Austin. A GPS tracker strapped to the leg of a chicken, says Metcalfe, means "that people who potentially will buy that chicken will know every step that that chicken has taken." ZhongAn Online, a Chinese insurance company, has already outfitted more than a 100,000 chickens with trackers." https://www.npr.org/2019/02/24/697185878/the-chicken-is-local-but-was-it-happy-gps-now-tells-the-life-story-of-your-poult
MickinMD ★ Posted February 26, 2019 Share #2 Posted February 26, 2019 In the United States, "free range chicken" can mean the chicken was allowed "outside" in a chicken-wire cage for just 15 minutes each day, spending the rest of its time in a crowded henhouse. The processed chicken is then treated with bleach which is banned by most advanced nations and means it can't be exported. Nevertheless, I bought 4 leg quarters at the supermarket today and will enjoy them.
Longjohn ★ Posted February 26, 2019 Share #3 Posted February 26, 2019 The free range chickens in my neighborhood are absolutely free range. Some of them spend more time in my yard than they do their own.
