Horses, unlike cattle, challenge fencing.  Always have always will.  Some of that is based in their fight or flight mentality.  Smooth fencing cause cut legs.  Barbed wire causes crippled animals.

I haven’t seen any crippled horses in the twentyfive years they have been pastured at the end of my driveway. Maybe Amish horses are smarter than English horses? My non-Amish neighbor uses electric fence to keep his horses in.
