Popular Post maddmaxx ★ Posted March 4, 2019 Popular Post Share #1 Posted March 4, 2019 I've posted all sorts of pics from critter cam here from deer to skunk. Night before last I believe we had a nocturnal visitor in the form of a chipmunk snatching food and trying to stay out of the way of the big boys. (and girls). Cute little buggers but we don't usually see them in the dark. The infrared flash just loves to reflect off retinas though. 3
MickinMD ★ Posted March 4, 2019 Share #2 Posted March 4, 2019 A friend's father used to take us squirrel hunting way out in the country when I was in my mid-teens. We'd each be assigned a spot and were told only fire in a certain direction and only at squirrels and to stay there for the next hour, after which we'd check-in with each other at a prearranged spot. While sitting there we didn't see squirrels very often, but the chipmunks were everywhere, even playing and running right across my outstretched, sitting-down legs. They're lucky they're too small to normally be hunted.
donkpow Posted March 4, 2019 Share #3 Posted March 4, 2019 We had a male live here for quite a long time. He raised at least one family but I believe they got eaten. He survived and remained for several more years. He would climb into the taxus bushes to get the seeds and just wail away. I think he was indicating his ownership of the property and looking for a new wife. One day I found him dead in the flower bed. Since he was unmarked, I assumed he died of aged related condition. I respected that little MF'er.
maddmaxx ★ Posted March 6, 2019 Author Share #4 Posted March 6, 2019 The call on the field has been reversed. One of our specialists has determined that the critter is too large and with too long a tail to be a chipmunk. After close examination of the area around it's "elbow" it has been determined that this creature is a flying squirrel. I'm surprised as I didn't even know that we had these around here. They are nocturnal and have probably been hanging around invisible to us till the IR camera caught one. Meet the Northern Flying Squirrel, up to 6" in length. 3
Longjohn ★ Posted March 6, 2019 Share #5 Posted March 6, 2019 A friend had flying squirrel family living in his attic. He wanted them gone but didn’t want to hurt them. He bought some box traps and was able to catch them he loaded them in his car and drove out to a large wooded area with a nice creek down in the hollow. He released the squirrels and watched them scamper off. They actually beat him home and we’re back in his attic chattering away when he got home. He trapped them again a week later and took them to a state park several hours away. They didn’t return that time. 1
