The Barbary Pirates were actually more slavers than pirates. Over the course of 2 centuries it is estimated that they captured over a million, mostly European, slaves. MickinMD ★ Posted March 7, 2019 Share #12 Posted March 7, 2019 They used to raid ships, mostly in the Mediterranean Sea, into the 1800's. After the USA achieved independence, the British no longer protected our shipping and it was attacked vigorously by those pirates with cargoes and ships stolen and crews held for ransom. The U.S. Marines were sent to attack Tripoli, which they did successfully and taught them a lesson. The resulting treaty with Tripoli, which was written by President John Adams, ratified by the Senate under V.P. Thomas Jefferson, and then signed during Jefferson's Presidency, stated, "The United States, which is not a Christian country..." is a famous document because it conclusively demonstrates that the founding fathers did not consider religion to be the basis for U.S. system of government. No, but I knew that Sweden was at war with them for generations because of raids on Swedish shipping up through the time the U.S. Marines attacked Tripoli. Funny, several hundred years earlier, it was the Vikings from the Baltic who were raiding shipping from Tripoli and other Mediterranean ports. Well, this is "American history" which we have come to find out is somewhat biased and corrected to our benefit. The Barbary Pirates were not halted until the French occupied most of the region. When looked at from a purely military perspective the American foray was pretty much a failure. The high point was the burning of an American warship, that had been captured by the pirates, before it could be used against us. Paper was signed, platitudes were made but the piracy (slavery) continued. It did make for a great few slogans though.
