4 miles on a heavy mountain bike is great.  Much harder than a road bike over same paved terrain. Congratulations and keep up the good work.

Surprisingly less than you might be thinking. Maybe 1/4 or 1/2 mph avg.  32lbs isn't that heavy as part of the "total" weight and overall effort involved to move a bike forward.  I'd think know Mick's position on the bike (non-aero) would be the much bigger limit on hustling along any faster.

The key, for Mick, seems to be simply getting back in the saddle consistently again. Bringing his avg HR down while keeping the same sort of pace over the next several months will definitely be a good "carrot" to both not go out too hard but also to show positive progress.  We all know that first ride back after a long time off is not a true reflection of our fitness, and I would expect to see Mick's stats make a quick move in the positive direction for a while as his body responds to a return to riding.  That's predicated on his not being over-exuberant at the joy of riding again, but regardless, we all see this is a GREAT start back for him.
