Randomguy Posted May 27, 2014 Share #1 Posted May 27, 2014 Seriously, is it so damn hard to lose the accent once you get over here? I can understand having it for a year or so, or much longer if you came to the states as an adult. What I can't understand is somebody coming over here at, say, ten years old or somesuch and still sounding FOB 30 years later. I have a friend from the Philipines and a friend from Korea that came over when they were 14, and you would be hard-pressed to tell they came from somewhere else. I have two coworkers who sound like they didn't bother to learn the language almost, and I am trying to figure out wth is wrong with them. SQ has a delightful accent, though, and need not change anything.
Former member Posted May 27, 2014 Share #2 Posted May 27, 2014 At 8-10 years old is when your accent gets ingrained. I lived in Florida for those years, so no one ever pegs me for being a Bostonian.
Former member Posted May 27, 2014 Share #3 Posted May 27, 2014 In my area, it seems like those that don't speak English talk louder than natural Americans. It might just be my imagination, but the Mexican people here are very loud when they talk.
Ralphie ★ Posted May 27, 2014 Share #4 Posted May 27, 2014 I used to know an Irish guy who laid it on thick - people would ask how long he has been over here, and the answer was aboot 20 years.

Destination Posted May 28, 2014 Share #9 Posted May 28, 2014 I can't fake an American accent either. Even when I write, I have a Canadian accent.

Randomguy Posted May 28, 2014 Author Share #11 Posted May 28, 2014 So did you lose your Ohio accent? No. Northern Ohio non-accent is the most sought after and neutral english in the US of A. It is what everyone should strive for.

Square Wheels Posted May 28, 2014 Share #14 Posted May 28, 2014 You are quite lucky, that is a repulsive accent. At least it's not a New York accent.
Randomguy Posted May 28, 2014 Author Share #15 Posted May 28, 2014 At least it's not a New York accent. That is repulsive, too. In fact, pretty much all of the east coast has horrendousness built right in as far as language is concerned. RI is exemplary in its awfulness, and is the worst that I have heard. Reverend Maynard does not have this accent, thankfully.
