Tell me about your aversion to

Timeshares. Is it because you don't want to vacation in a limited number of locations, can't commit to travel annually, hidden costs and fees, or something else? I've never sat through a presentation, having avoided them like the plague, despite the bribes they offer. So what am I not missing that I would hate if I owned a timeshare?

How do you know right now where you want to go on a vacation next year?  Also, your timeshare was probably used as a porn-production set by another "owner", so there is probably semen on the ceiling.

My wife's boss owns a time share with a company that has resorts in numerous locations. There is a slight fee with some of the properties, but as long as you want to vacation on a Mexican beach, they can accommodate you.

As for the second part, how does that differ from any other hotel in the world?

In case you don't want semen-covered ceilings in Mexico, I suppose.

A work colleague is an executor of her mother's estate.  It's been hellish for her to unravel/get out of the timeshare her parents bought.  (her father died a decade ago).  There are various clauses in the agreement that will trick one...and pull you in to keep on paying/difficult to get out.  She's had to hire a lawyer to sift through the mess.

I've seen tv commercials for attorneys who specialize in getting people out of timeshare agreements.

So is this a good threat to my kids when they are misbehaving? Do that one more time and I'm getting a time share to totally screw you when I am dead?

You aren't missing anything in the timeshare buying thing.  They are a bad investment.  Although, the presentation event might be serving halibut.  ?

It's like the razor companies making the real money on the blade refills. The timeshare companies turn the maintenance fee into the annuity. It goes on & on & on & on. Very hard to get out. And the companies promising to get you out are another kind of terrible. Their own scam going on. Go to E bay and see all the timeshares going for $1.00.

Now a halibut steak dinner can get me to attend. Last year WoScrapr & I went to an annuity sales pitch on Valentines Day.

Everyone I know that has a time share thought it was a good idea at the time, but lives change. I cant tell you the times we've been invited to use a friends timeshare just because they've already payed for it. They say its like buying a boat. The two happiest times of owning them is when you first buy them, then after you finally sell them.

I would expect nothing less.

I personally know no one who own a timeshare, not even in the Rocky Mountains. Everyone I know locally drives/hotel Or they bought a chalet/condo a 2nd place over a decade ago and spends time whenever, wherever year round.  And these are people with sufficient money.  But then, no one I know has a home in 365 yr. no-snow region...  and living not far from the mountains  (110 km. west), it's just better to hotel it whenever it suits. Calgary is 110 km. that close. Vancouver is 100 km. south of Whistler.

Clearly we're not candidates for 2nd place in warm/tropical areas.

Maybe @Longjohn wants to sail at Moraine instead of kayaking this summer?

My brother always wanted a small sail boat. He finally bought one maybe ten years ago. He didn't have a vehicle he could put a hitch on at the time so he had one of his sons pick it up and deliver it to his house. That's where it sits today, he has never had it in the water.  I can sail just fine in my kayaks if I decide to put a sail on them.

Does he need a time share in Cancun?
