So what's the deal with Amazon Prime?

Are you asking what's new with Amazon Prime or how Amazon Prime works?

They've had a free month trial deal for years.  Three years ago, I needed a Garmin automobile GPS in 2 days before an out of town trip and grabbed the free trial for free shipping - otherwise there was a ridiculous $57 for two days for it!  I was going to cancel after the month, but during that month I discovered Amazon Instant Video and my Samsung Smart TV has a WiFi app for it built into the TV.  The Amazon Prime Card - which is only used on Amazon - gives 5% cash back all the time. The cash back can be set up to be automatically applied to your card statement each month.

So, I've been doing Amazon Prime ever since and no longer get cable TV: a $50, thin-film, amplified, 12"x13" antenna tacked on the wall behind my TV gets all the Baltimore broadcast TV stations and most of the Washington, D.C. ones - about 32 channels in all.  That plus the tremendous selection of TV shows, movies, documentaries, etc. from Amazon is enough for me.

Of course, free shipping on small orders and 2 days delivery for most stuff is an added bonus.

If you sign up for this, your soul slips away and steals cars from kids.

...my wife signed up for it, so I get to watch all the streaming TV stuff.

I am ashamed.

But I still watch it.:)

In that regard it's a lot like online porn.

Sure, but how much effort that entails depends on your tv.

You can also stream it to your computer, which I did with Prime (I only had it for a year) and Netflix.

You should be able to record for later, but one of the points of streaming is that it's there when you want it. There are a number of devices that do that.

Have you looked at tv prices lately? Prices have come way down.

We watched via the computer until we finally bought a smart tv.  I know that purchase is hard for some of you to comprehend for this household. My only problem is trying to get the tv to not provide the programs in HD.  I can control this with Netflix, by limiting the subscription to one screen, but I've not figured out how to control this for Amazon prime on the tv.  Setting it for non-HD is no problem on the computer.

I somehow ended up with Amazon Prime. I didn’t sign up for it. I checked my bank statement and couldn’t find I charge for it anywhere. I don’t believe in paying to shop. The free shipping is nice but it’ snot free if you have to pay a yearly fee to get it. I always had free shipping on Amazon anyway because I wouldn’t buy unless I had enough to reach the minimum.

Yes, you can still watch streaming video without a smart TV a couple of different ways.

1) If you have an HDMI connection on your computer and TV you can turn the TV into a computer screen plus the sound comes from your TV's audio (I use a soundbar).  I bought a 25' long HDMI cable that I run along the edges of my living room to connect my TV to the laptop I'm holding in my chair when I want to watch a movie or TV show I've got on a computer file - putting the laptop on a stand next to the chair after starting the movie on the free VLC Media Player and setting the TV to "HDMI."

While babysitting my nephew, we watched the original Robin Williams movie Jumanji at his home via an HDMI cable (I keep an extra one in my car) and it worked fine.

2) You can get Roku (a one time payment for the device, I think) and maybe other stuff that plugs into, I think, the TV's USB port and run Amazon Instant Video through it.  My sister does Amazon Instant Video through Roku because her 55" TV isn't smart.

As far as recording the streaming media, you'd have to record it while it's playing on your computer or smartphone. I've never tried it. There are various screen capture video software programs that are probably the way to do it, where capturing the sound would have to be included.

Google "recording amazon instant video files" and a lot of potential solutions come up for PC, iOS, and smartphones.

Here's one list I skimmed through that looks promising: https://showmore.com/record-amazon-instant-video.html

It might be free - I clicked on the "start recording" button and it opened a download window for their file. I don't know it the program requires you to pay for a key when you first run it to make it work, etc. and wouldn't be surprised if it does.  If it does, I'm sure there are other freeware screen capture programs.

Thanks Mick. I have found OBS Studio to be the best open source/free screen capture program. At one time, I tried to capture streaming video from the Miles City camera. Streaming video comes in as big chunks then it turns off and gives you another chunk with a different address. Proprietary streams use their own players. That's why I have had trouble capturing live stream. I can download videos from storage sites like YouTube because the video is stored at a specific address and I am not trying to view or play the video while downloading.

My current tv converter box has an hdmi out connection. Input is exclusively from a cable system type wire. There is also a usb connection for playing video from a storage device.

Yes but it's not a priority. I was thinking I'd like to hook a tv up to ethernet and do something. I've already a local OTA antenna and box.

...ROKU is built into a lot of the newer TV's, but they used to (and probably still do) sell a ROKU box for like $19.99 (BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE !!!) all over the online marketplace and in electronics stores.  The ROKU plugs into some of the inputs on your TV (if the TV is really, really old, you won't have a usable input).  Then you need a home wireless router, so the ROKU can get connected to the internet.

It's not real hard to make it work, but you have to read and fiddle around setting it up.

Streaming is pre-recorded, and like online porn, is available whenever you want it. :)
