Square Wheels Posted April 10, 2019 Share #1 Posted April 10, 2019 I've had someone who has worked for me for about 15 years. She is moving on to another department and tomorrow we're taking her to dinner. I need to say a few words. Any tips? I am not social and generally avoid these types of dinners, so I don't have good role models or examples.
Popular Post Zephyr Posted April 10, 2019 Popular Post Share #2 Posted April 10, 2019 Just say you generally do not like people but enjoyed her working for you (everyone will laugh because they will know at least the first part is true) Also say how much you appreciated how much work she did and how it made your job easier, and give a small example(but only if it is true) Do not try to be funny..., it will come off as awkward. 7
Zephyr Posted April 10, 2019 Share #3 Posted April 10, 2019 And tell her in front of everyone the door is always open if she wants to come back (but only if it is true)

I would have said pretty much this. Thank you’s have more meaning when heartfelt and sincere. Just speak from the heart.

donkpow Posted April 11, 2019 Share #7 Posted April 11, 2019 Give her a big bonus check. Then everyone will want to leave and you can work in peace. 1
BuffJim Posted April 11, 2019 Share #8 Posted April 11, 2019 A couple examples of her endearing qualities will go far, or when she saved your bacon. If family is there, impress on them how good she is at her job.

The SNL skit was actually almost funny when a woman came along who enjoyed that and gave it back in kind. Jason Sedakis is perfect for the role. :)

Kirby Posted April 11, 2019 Share #15 Posted April 11, 2019 Zephyr's advice is very good. If there are legitimate examples, you may want to give one short example about a good work thing she did (completing a tricky project, some innovation she developed, proactive things she did for work, etc.) and one that is more personal or highlights something good about her and not just what works she's done (such as how she always helps a coworker, her ability to handle stress with a good demeanor, her ability to motivate others etc.).

I thanked her, gave some general examples, some specific, and made people laugh. I gave her a lululemon gift card, she really appreciated it. The_Karen_Cooper_Incident Posted April 12, 2019 Share #30 Posted April 12, 2019 You sound like a great manager SW. It sounds like you struggle with social issues but you internalize it well enough to ask for guidance, which is way better than some of the managers I have had in the past. I have hade some real sociopaths as managers in the past (naturally I got along well with them). Good job man. Shu Fang
