bikeman564™ Posted April 12, 2019 Share #1 Posted April 12, 2019 What do you call it? Growing up its always been dinner to me.
Randomguy Posted April 12, 2019 Share #2 Posted April 12, 2019 One in the same to me. What do you want for supper is exactly the same as what do you want for dinner. I just called it dinner, the old folks called it supper.

Kirby Posted April 12, 2019 Share #4 Posted April 12, 2019 When my grandmother was growing up in farm country, they'd have a big meal at noon and then a small supper. To me, dinner suggests the main meal of the day and supper is a lighter meal.

Dinner was the mid-day meal and supper was in the evening. i use them interchangeably.

groupw Posted April 12, 2019 Share #7 Posted April 12, 2019 Supper is the less formal evening meal. Dinner was going someplace fancy at night or the Sunday meal after church. 2
jsharr ★ Posted April 12, 2019 Share #8 Posted April 12, 2019 I use both, but dinner is more prevalent for the evening meal name in our house.
ChrisL Posted April 12, 2019 Share #9 Posted April 12, 2019 Supper was a word I never even heard of until leaving for the military. We always said dinner, mid day meal is lunch.
shotgun Posted April 12, 2019 Share #10 Posted April 12, 2019 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. There is no such thing as Supper.
MickinMD ★ Posted April 12, 2019 Share #11 Posted April 12, 2019 We always called it supper. But if someone said "dinner" it was understood as meaning the same thing: the evening meal. The was an episode of the BBC comedy "Are you being served?" where they argued over the same two words, where Captain Peacock claimed that sophisticated people call it "Dinner" and lower class people call it "Supper." Most of the rest of the characters disagreed.
Airehead Posted April 13, 2019 Share #12 Posted April 13, 2019 Dinner main meal of day. Supper last meal of day. (Think of Last Supper). So dinner can be supper; but supper cannot be dinner, if dinner is the noon meal and you eat again in the evening. Mr Aire often has a washtub full of ice cream for supper while watching Jeopardy.

You are confusing me, if dinner can be supper, why can't supper be dinner?

Ice cream is good for breakfast but it must be Breyer's Vanilla covered in fresh fruit, such as strawberries or blueberries.
Razors Edge ★ Posted April 13, 2019 Share #17 Posted April 13, 2019 Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Hoagie (specifically) or sub (generally). Soda, sneakers, and winter hat or ski cap.
