Truthfully, they often will explore your mask as well, but as there is no ;'taste' (for lack of a better word) they do not tend to see it as food, they are just curious.

Not long ago there was a local diver here who lost her very expensive dive light to an octopus who grabbed it and put it back in their den

If you were to cut off an octopus arm, is it proportionately less smart?

The one pictured above was in Portugal last fall. I've had it before in Greece, and it was amazing both times. The Greeks and Portuguese definitely know how to cook 'em.
