MickinMD Posted April 15, 2019 Share #1 Posted April 15, 2019 I'm sure Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris will be rebuilt - they've been renovating it since I visited there in 1998, but what an awful loss to history and culture! I thought I had videotape of my mother lighting a candle there in 1998, hoping it would help my sister in her quest to get pregnant - which she soon did get pregnant with my nephew Ryan - to whom I've shown the candle lighting video. But the candle was in Sacre Coeur church, up on the hill called Montmartre, near the big Parisian artist colony. I did get some video of Notre Dame with a lo-res 1998 camcorder that didn't do great on the dim inside, but it will give you an idea of what was lost: 1998 was pre-Euro and the French still used Francs. The church in Brooklyn, Maryland I was Baptized in burned down due to candles - which were banned in the rebuilt church. I wonder what started the Notre Dame blaze?

Airehead Posted April 16, 2019 Share #3 Posted April 16, 2019 Some of the bronzes and statues were out for renovation but so many other things lost.
Scrapr Posted April 16, 2019 Share #4 Posted April 16, 2019 and somewhere in Paris a plumber is not sleeping well tonight because his insurance agent didn't return his frantic phone call and @MickinMD where was the Joan of arc burial stone? We were there 2 years ago just after Easter

We were there 2 years ago just after Easter The stone in my vid-cap isn't a burial stone: it's just the explanation under that statue of Joan of Arc that follows it in the pictures above. It was 21 years ago so I don't remember exactly where it was. I have about 10 minutes of video from inside Notre Dame and it's in the middle of it, so maybe that puts it behind the main altar. There was no Joan of Arc burial. She was burned alive by the English and her ashes thrown in the river.

Looks like she was burned in Rouen. They have a cathedral there and a small park where she was burned
Randomguy Posted April 16, 2019 Share #7 Posted April 16, 2019 This thread has more pictures than the other Notre Dame thread, should it be the official thread?

We got a guy here we call the human torch, for good reason. Hopefully, he isn't in Paris.

Some from my pre-digital days. Makes me wish I 1) was a better photographer, and 2) had more film. Probably was using a cheap 35mm camera still in 2000.
Fret Buzz Posted April 16, 2019 Share #13 Posted April 16, 2019 A few years later, with a digital camera, but still no camera skill Scary how on subsequent visits, I don't have any new photos. - or maybe haven't picked through them all yet. My hope is that the facade and most of the stonework survives, and that it turns out the roof and the steeple are what are the two biggest losses (and replaceable). Not sure how much of the interior is ruined, but it seemed they had at least proactively been moving stuff out ahead of the restoration work, so that will be a good thing if true. Stain glass can be redone and hopefully every square inch has been documented so things like the gargoyles or the way the ceiling is vaulted can be replicated faithfully.
