Popular Post 12string Posted June 11, 2019 Popular Post Share #1 Posted June 11, 2019 Last night, I was trying to repair my watering system valve controller, when I removed an M3x10 pan head thread forming screw, it bounced off the bench to the floor, and a 10 minute search yielded no results. Because that's what I do, I lose one piece of hardware on each repair job. I was just at the gym for a lunchtime workout. Standing in front of the machine, deep breath, focus - hey, what's that on the floor? An M3x10 pan head thread forming screw! Seriously? It must have gotten stuck somewhere on my sneaker and lived there for 16 hours until it decided to relocate to the gym floor. I picked it up, put it in my pocket, placed it carefully on the bench while I was changing so I wouldn't lose it again. And that's where I left it. It's what I do. 3
BR46 Posted June 11, 2019 Share #2 Posted June 11, 2019 I was repairing a machine at work when I dropped a small 3mm bolt and could not find it. After searching for 20 minutes I gave up only to find out that it fell out of my shirt pocket when I was changing clothes. 1
12string Posted June 11, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted June 11, 2019 Last week while changing the alternator I did find a previously relocated 10mm socket in behind the flywheel. Best guess is it's been there about 3 years 1
jsharr ★ Posted June 11, 2019 Share #4 Posted June 11, 2019 I try to use magnetic tipped screw drivers and / or bits / drivers when working with small screws. I also keep a magnet handy to place them on when I take them out.
Further Posted June 11, 2019 Share #5 Posted June 11, 2019 While making a service call I found a screwdriver that I had left behind, 3 months earlier...

Once I carefully extract them with the magnetic screwdriver, I always find something to knock them off the screwdriver on the way to the ice cube tray. I had several 13mm wrenches that I found inside of machines that belonged to other workers that no longer work there.
ChrisL Posted June 11, 2019 Share #8 Posted June 11, 2019 My dad worked construction and wore one of those leather tool belts with the pouches for nails & such. He lost his wedding band one day at work, did a search and said F it, it’s long gone. Fast forward about 10 years and he’s sick with cancer & unable to work and not likely he’ll ever work again. One of my sisters is cleaning the work stuff out of his car, comes upon his tool belt, starts snooping around in the pouches and finds the ring!?!?!? How he never saw it in there all those years is beyond me... After he passed my mom let that sister keep his band.
Longjohn ★ Posted June 11, 2019 Share #9 Posted June 11, 2019 I’ve found that most things have way more bolts and screws than needed. 1
