The phone we had in the 50's in rural NC had no dial.  You talked to an operator to place the call.  And we were on a party line.  You had to listen the the sequence of the rings to know if it was for you or not.  And being on a party line, many times you couldn't call out and others couldn't call you if someone else on the party line was using their phone.
