Why no thread reminding us of the Summer Solstice today, June 21st ?

I've asked some of my fellow chemists and physicists and none of them knew the answer for sure since we didn't know any geologists:

If June 21st is the longest day (in terms of daylight) of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, why is it the beginning of Summer and not the middle of Summer?

A couple of us guessed correctly, though it took looking it up on the Internet to verify it:  the "lag of the seasons" occurs, making the hottest day a month or two after June 21st and the coldest day a month or two after the shortest day, Dec. 31 because on June 21st the Oceans, big Lakes, and Rivers still haven't warmed up and there's still snow on the tops of some mountains and on Dec. 21st the Waters and Land are still warmer than the air.
