An important fact: The use of multi viscosity oils in smaller motors, like lawn mowers, may not provide sufficient lubrication of the engine. The small motors don't get hot enough for the polymers to go long. IOW, the oil is always at the lower viscosity. In this case, that would be 10. Multi viscosity oils are only recommended for cold weather applications. Normally, the recommended viscosity is straight 30.

I've always used 10W-30 until I got my Honda Fit, in which I must use 5W-20 synthetic.  If I have the Precision Tune people supply it, it costs $65 on top of the $20 oil change plus filter.  So I buy 5 qts. of the good Mobil 1 stuff for $29 at Walmart and bring it with me for my roughly annual oil change.
