I don’t know that i’d want to take those wheels on so much rock, but it looks like it handles fire roads nicely.

Allen ★ Posted July 16, 2019 Share #4 Posted July 16, 2019 I’ve built a half a dozen bamboo frames. They were all rideable but always a touch too flexy for my taste. Ended up going back to steel for my commuter.

ChrisL Posted July 16, 2019 Share #6 Posted July 16, 2019 Any of you remember the wooden track rims from back in the day? The LBS that sponsored me back in the day had a track bike built up with them. They were so luscious but not for the road. Not sure I’d trust them on the track either... late Posted July 16, 2019 Share #7 Posted July 16, 2019 It's a tease. I've seen reviews of Calfee, people seem to like them. There's always going to be questions about cost and durability, but if I won the lottery, I'd get one, just for the snob appeal. You can also get bamboo over carbon fly rods, have to get one of those, too.

There is a small Italian maker still around. Looked at some for one of my bamboo frames but the price was...high.
late Posted July 16, 2019 Share #9 Posted July 16, 2019 " What you do get, though, is a hatful of comfort. Calfee claim their bike has even more vibration damping than carbon so we decided to test it properly by doing a century ride first time out – in for a penny and all that. The result? It feels great. Along with the carbon fork and cockpit, It smoothes over rough road surfaces beautifully and stops unavoidable potholes jangling your teeth loose. It’s a very comfortable bike. It might not have the all-out speed of a lightweight whipper-snapper, but you’ll be happy enough to sit in the saddle and keep the old legs spinning all day." https://road.cc/content/review/11611-calfee-bamboo-road https://www.cyclist.co.uk/reviews/3403/calfee-luna-pro-review

Smooth as silk.

I know it’s a place, but when Specialized was able to trademark “Roubaix”, common sense can be uncommon.

Didn't really explain why, other than to say there was nothing wrong with the rims. He posted a series of videos on Youtube showing the manufacturing process. Interesting show.

Interesting to me in that the previous referenced links showed clincher wheels. Making the groove has to be tough... The rims I saw back in the day were all tubulars. Not sure if they all did.
