Randomguy Posted July 22, 2019 Share #1 Posted July 22, 2019 RO's birthday is coming up on the 6th, and my niece and brother were over at my parent's house when I called today. My parents did the group call thing (which I detest), and the vegan niece said she was getting RO a book for her birthday called "Communism for Kids", and said it unironically. My niece, who has never known oppression even for a second (except when being the oppressor to her mom) and has everything handed to her, is a SJW. I don't even know that Cheese would have anything to do with her now. There is still time for her to grow out of it, sometime after college.
Page Turner Posted July 22, 2019 Share #2 Posted July 22, 2019 ...it's hard not to be scornful of the young who are both entitled and well intentioned at the same time. But try. I find myself somewhat taken aback by fervent young progressives, who have never accomplished much in the way of the political, but want to rewrite society with little appreciation of either history, politics, or the idea that there are a significant number of people who think differently than them who are not the acolytes of Satan. But then I remember I was once a politically involved hippie. And look how I turned out. 1

shootingstar Posted July 22, 2019 Share #5 Posted July 22, 2019 It would be hard to suggest that a book for RO would be a fun book...on sharing and helping with other people. That's all she needs. Isn't that what at the core of communism is? ? Sharing...cookie cutter-like. We have adults who scream communism as soon as there is any thought of having services and programs to benefit everyone when they are in need.. How childish of them. ?

2Far ★ Posted July 22, 2019 Share #16 Posted July 22, 2019 "Communism For Kids" Quote Communism, capitalism, work, crisis, and the market, described in simple storybook terms and illustrated by drawings of adorable little revolutionaries. Once upon a time, people yearned to be free of the misery of capitalism. How could their dreams come true? This little book proposes a different kind of communism, one that is true to its ideals and free from authoritarianism. Offering relief for many who have been numbed by Marxist exegesis and given headaches by the earnest pompousness of socialist politics, it presents political theory in the simple terms of a children's story, accompanied by illustrations of lovable little revolutionaries experiencing their political awakening. It all unfolds like a story, with jealous princesses, fancy swords, displaced peasants, mean bosses, and tired workers–not to mention a Ouija board, a talking chair, and a big pot called “the state.” Before they know it, readers are learning about the economic history of feudalism, class struggles in capitalism, different ideas of communism, and more. Finally, competition between two factories leads to a crisis that the workers attempt to solve in six different ways (most of them borrowed from historic models of communist or socialist change). Each attempt fails, since true communism is not so easy after all. But it's also not that hard. At last, the people take everything into their own hands and decide for themselves how to continue. Happy ending? Only the future will tell. With an epilogue that goes deeper into the theoretical issues behind the story, this book is perfect for all ages and all who desire a better world. But then I remember I was once a politically involved hippie. And look how I turned out. That lack of historical knowledge is what bothers me. There are well-thought-out arguments in favor of various degrees of capitalism and socialism, but few of the people I've discussed it with have any clue of what has or hasn't worked in the past. You can't present a case and argue with people who think they know it all yet know virtually nothing. It's like Socrates, in Plato's The Apology, saying he realized the Oracle of Delphi was right in calling him the wisest man because he was the only one who realized how little he know. It also drives me crazy that people advocating far-left positions are called "progressives" - implying they represent progress - or those advocating far-right positions are called "conservatives" - implying they are for traditional values. And it bugs me that some of the young far-left or far-right people are showcased on the news as if they are today's leaders and are changing things when they can't even get anything passed in Congress. Well, that's as far as this rant can go without having to move to the P&R forum.

But then I remember I was once a politically involved hippie. And look how I turned out. It isn’t that she is all into it, that and chickism in film and all, she just doesn’t have the awareness to know who gives a crap what college students ‘know’, or the appropriate time to trot it out. I think she just wants something to rail against and has time and energy to rail. She is a bit anxious and overly serious about things, so I don’t know that she always won’t be a pain in the ass. I hope it is mostly a stage (the part about not knowing that aging grandparents don’t care about her take on cattle getting killed for ham salad and chicken wings, for instance).
