JerrySTL ★ Posted August 20, 2019 Share #4 Posted August 20, 2019 Someone once told me that the Arkansas River is pronounced R-Kansas. Probably pulling my leg. Wait a minute - I googled it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkansas_River Pronunciations[edit] Name pronunciation varies by region. Some people in the upper reaches of the river, particularly in Kansas, and parts of Colorado, pronounce it /ɑːrˈkænzəs/ ar-KAN-zəs,[9] People in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and some parts of Colorado, typically pronounce it /ˈɑːrkənsɔː/ AR-kən-saw, which is how the Arkansas state is always pronounced according to a state law passed in 1881.[10]

Zephyr Posted August 21, 2019 Share #17 Posted August 21, 2019 I have always said it as "R-kin-saw" We have the same sort of thing up here. A large majority of Canadians from outside the Atlantic Provinces pronounce Newfoundland wrong. Even reporters and national news anchors to federal politicians cannot seem to get such a seemingly simplistic word right.
