Further Posted October 16, 2019 Share #3 Posted October 16, 2019 When we were young and crazy (before kids) we had house parties that were pretty wide open.... friends of friends would be found on the couch in the morning, we always counted on Badge to keep the animals under control.... 1
MickinMD ★ Posted October 16, 2019 Share #4 Posted October 16, 2019 We have evolved toward being compatible with dogs just as wolves evolved into dogs that are compatible with us over the past 15,000 years. That probably causes us to feel closer to dogs. A study was done to see if animals and children understood when we were trying to help them. Two upside down bowls were placed in front of them and only one had a treat under it. The adult human handler would point to the bowl with the treat. But almost all animals could not consistently understand the meaning. Not even chimps. Only dogs understood and human babies 10 months or older. In another experiment, it was determined that dogs, like humans, look at the right side of another human's face to detect emotion. We do it mostly subconsciously, but it's called "Left Gaze Bias" and one online site explains it: "The left side of our brain controls the right side of the body and the right side of the brain controls the left side. It’s the left hemisphere of the brain that controls how we show emotion which is displayed on the right side of our face. The left side of our face shows almost no emotion because the right side of the brain has a different function and doesn’t control our emotional state of mind. Looking at the right side of the face is called left gaze bias, or left face bias.... dogs are unique among the animal kingdom as the only ones who can see and understand our emotions by looking at our face. Dogs have a left gaze bias and can see our emotions. It hasn't been detected yet, but I'll bet there are things we've learned from interacting with dogs just as they have from us and that is related to why we tend to love dogs. Cats and other animals? They're ok but it's not the same kind of relationship as with dogs. 1

Square Wheels Posted October 16, 2019 Share #6 Posted October 16, 2019 We're down to one cat. I may not get another pet. It hurt too much to lose them.

It is a real calculation of trade-offs. I say it is worth it. But it Shirley is close.

Longjohn ★ Posted October 17, 2019 Share #11 Posted October 17, 2019 Most of our annimules invited themselves. Last night an opossum beat the three raccoons to the feral cat dish. He was nervous with me watching him with the deck light on. He got off the deck without finishing his dinner. The raccoons played cleanup and not one bite of kitty kibble was in the dish come morning.
