MickinMD ★ Posted November 4, 2019 Share #15 Posted November 4, 2019 Communications seems to be the big thing now. It's the driver of creating ever-faster, lower-energy requiring electronic chips, better satellites, better phones, etc. We no longer have the Cold War to drive us to greater science and technology and we now have slower internet service than much of the rest of the world, more top scientists are leaving America to do top research in other countries than are coming to America now, health care that's no longer the best, etc.
Road Runner Posted November 4, 2019 Share #16 Posted November 4, 2019 Seems like laziness is a big factor. People don't want to walk, so we now have scooters, hoverboards and Segways. They don't want to shop, so we can have everything delivered to our front doors, including groceries. They don't want to fix meals, so they buy precooked crap or have their meals delivered to them. In the near future, the skies will be filled with delivery drones in the grand quest to keep people as inactive as possible. And best of all, the laborious task of driving will soon be a thing of the past. Just sit back and play video games instead.

Being online 24/7 is one of the big drivers these days. Laser systems that make the vias in ckt boards were capable of drilling thousands of holes per minute when I left the industry and that number was still rising rapidly. Some cell phone ckt boards were nearly 1/4" thick after all the layers were stacked together. That box you use to post dog pictures on the internet probably has more computational power than early spacecraft.
