Naomi Posted December 14, 2019 Share #1 Posted December 14, 2019 I just watched a YT video of a sailing channel I follow. The guy is based in Yellowknife for a few years and he posted a winter bike ride at -41 degrees. I love cycling but only to about -10C. That is when trainers start to make sense. bikeman564™ Posted December 14, 2019 Share #2 Posted December 14, 2019 -41° is too cold indeed. I've ridden to 10°F, but prefer to stay above the freezing point.
BR46 Posted December 14, 2019 Share #3 Posted December 14, 2019 When it below 50F outside I look for different forms of entertainment. I have raced motorcycles in -5F I didn't like it but I did it.
petitepedal ★ Posted December 14, 2019 Share #4 Posted December 14, 2019 Well..we had some frosty mornings for the 3 speed tour (in May)...and right out the gate there is a good size midwest climb..my lungs didn't like that...but an easy flat ride..I am probably okay in the above freezing category..however..I have not actually tried it...cross country skiing, the coldest was probably -10 to -15 f...but after a week of -40 we wanted OUT...this was back in the olden days..mid 70's...
JerrySTL ★ Posted December 14, 2019 Share #5 Posted December 14, 2019 I've ridden when it was below freezing but only if it's dry. I don't do cold when it's wet or snowy.
groupw Posted December 14, 2019 Share #6 Posted December 14, 2019 I’ve done a few rides in the 20s F. This time of year, this area is very open and barren after harvest. Nowhere to hide from the wind! I will generally switch to the gravel bike below 30. Get the same workout in a shorter time and lower level of windchill exposure. Road Runner Posted December 14, 2019 Share #7 Posted December 14, 2019 After demolishing my right tibial plateau about 10 years ago, my right knee hates the cold. I'm not crazy about it myself. I seldom ride outside at temps below 55F. I have an indoor bike for cold weather.

Aboot the same for me. I don't think now I would go below 20F though.
Dottleshead ★ Posted December 14, 2019 Share #9 Posted December 14, 2019 I would say anything in Canada. If it''s Canadian cold -- it's too cold.

Road Runner Posted December 14, 2019 Share #11 Posted December 14, 2019 Riding inside has it's advantages. It's warm, clothing is whatever, it's warm, you can watch TV, it's warm, bathroom and kitchen nearby, and last but not least, a zero chance of having an accident! Also, it's warm.

Rattlecan ★ Posted December 14, 2019 Share #16 Posted December 14, 2019 0 f (-18c) is about the coldest I've ridden in. These days, I have no desire to do that any more. The winter I worked up in the NWT, I saw lots of people riding their bikes around town at -30 or colder. Every night, between 2 and 3 am, there was a guy that rode into town on the infamous Ingram Trail from the Giant gold mine. I saw him several times, but any time you would be within radio range, which was about 30 km mobile to mobile, you would hear the chatter about him around that time, so I'm pretty sure it was just about every night, and it gets damn cold at night up there.
Further Posted December 14, 2019 Share #17 Posted December 14, 2019 I used to ride in the snow, down to the teens I'd guess. These days I'm doing good to ride when it's nice out. Might have put a hundred miles in this summer

ChrisL Posted December 14, 2019 Share #19 Posted December 14, 2019 It just doesn’t get that cold here. I’d be uncomfortable below 45 degrees as I just don’t have proper clothing for anything cooler. But I’ll ride in temps over 100 degrees and have ridden in temps of about 105.
MickinMD ★ Posted December 15, 2019 Share #20 Posted December 15, 2019 I walk in the mall if it's below 40F. I haven't invested in Winter cycling wear, except for a balaclava and cycling gloves, but at 40F wearing two pairs of socks and running shoes and regular winter clothing, I'm nice and warm all over except my toes get cold after an hour. Since I rarely ride for much more than an hour, that's not a problem. I may do heat pads to improve the results, but don't really need them.
