MoseySusan Posted January 2, 2020 Share #1 Posted January 2, 2020 The goldfinches hadn’t been to my feeder for a couple of weeks. I thought maybe the seed was old, so I was going to bring it back to the store. But today the flock showed up again. I wish I could afford the iPhone 11 with the telephoto lens so I could take better bird photos. I watch the feeders with a pair of Nikon field binoculars and get great views.

Popular Post Tizeye Posted January 3, 2020 Popular Post Share #10 Posted January 3, 2020 The Painted Bunting was taken today a Canaveral National Seashore Welcome Center. Only shot could take. Place was invaded by birders that scared them into the brush. One guy with binoculars was confirming pair was there. Finally they left and when quieted down, ventured out onto the observation deck and this one came up but not into to the clearing...then retreated back. The Rosetta Spoonbill was Dec 26 on 2 mile "birding trail" at the Wetlands Park which was a family hike. Not expecting at and the only one seen at the very end of the hike. Today, on the 2 miles between the Welcome Center and the Ocean, two tempted us, flying over the road. Many times can see the ponds near the launch site loaded with them, but not today.

MickinMD ★ Posted January 3, 2020 Share #15 Posted January 3, 2020 Here are my most recent bird pictures - I apologize that they are cropped from highly-zoomed smartphone pics and not very high-def. Here are Canada Geese in December: they think Maryland is warm enough for the winter and stay here before flying back to the NE shore of Hudson Bay. Most other colorful birds are smart enough to fly south for the winter. If they ate fish from the never-frozen Chesapeake Bay, I'd understand why they're here, but they eat, "leaves, flowers, stems, roots, seeds and berries." They gather in the 100's in the park where I usually walk Jake and sometimes darken the sky when they pass over about 20 feet overhead: Things were more interesting May, when this pair of Northern Mockingbirds - the 2nd one is the little dark speck on the right of the left or 1st pic - dived at and chased a very much larger crow away - they probably had a nest in the trees to the left of the picture. The mockingbird in the right or 2nd pic chased the crow for at least 1/4 mile in the air:

groupw Posted February 28, 2020 Share #41 Posted February 28, 2020 They should be showing up in bigger numbers soon. We usually have several in our yard, but haven't seen them yet. Longjohn ★ Posted February 29, 2020 Share #45 Posted February 29, 2020 The stinking boring birds have descended on my feeders. They are hogs, I filled the feeder before breakfast this morning and before lunch time they had it empty. They shovel all the seed out of the feeder with their beaks down onto the concrete porch to share with their friends.
