Ralphie ★ Posted January 11, 2020 Share #1 Posted January 11, 2020 I’m hoping it is just the inside lever is broken and I can still pull the cable with vice grips. I’ll know shortly, hopefully. These 20-25 year old cars get a problem every now and then.

Further Posted January 11, 2020 Share #5 Posted January 11, 2020 The cable broke on an old Corolla we had, had a hell of a time opening the hood.
team scooter Posted January 11, 2020 Share #6 Posted January 11, 2020 You're getting off easy with vise grips. If the roof mechanism on the RF fails, I'll need to dig out the separate 12 page instruction booklet (not exaggerating) on manually closing the hard top. I'll need some kind of a wire thingy, an adapter, two hex wrenches, two ropes (all provided) and a second person (not included). Sadly, its not something I would feel hopeful that AAA would know how to fix.
Airehead ★ Posted January 11, 2020 Share #7 Posted January 11, 2020 Perhaps the lever is good but the cable is broken. That would suck.

The lever is pulled and the cable is loose or actually just has some slack, but the hood is locked tight. My Fonzie bump is snot working. I had read on the Interwebz that sometimes the lever breaks, but mine is snot broken. I have always had to push the mechanism back to get the hood to latch closed because the spring was too weak to do that, but getting stuck in that position led to the hood being loose, not shut tight. Wilbur said it best, the 21st century has failed me. Although technically, the car is from the 20th century.
maddmaxx ★ Posted January 11, 2020 Share #9 Posted January 11, 2020 1st internet advice.......use a screwdriver slipped in under the front of the hood to push the latch open. Folks say it takes several tries and some patience but it works. just follow your hood latch cable and you'll see the "hook" that it is connected to on the latch. Then place the screwdriver in such a way that you will move it the same direction as the cable normally would. Bingo!

Ralphie ★ Posted January 11, 2020 Author Share #11 Posted January 11, 2020 I've probably got a few months until I run oot of earl. It doesn't leak a drop but it uses a quart in maybe 6 months or so with the minimal miles it gets.
maddmaxx ★ Posted January 11, 2020 Share #12 Posted January 11, 2020 2nd internet advice. Park it in a bad section of town. Someone will open your hood for you. 1
maddmaxx ★ Posted January 11, 2020 Share #13 Posted January 11, 2020 3rd internet advice. If you can't get to the end of the cable in the drivers compartment, remove the upper fenderwell liner and grab the cable there.

The hood goes flush against the plastic bumper cover, so really no place to get a skwoodwivah in there from ootside.

Longjohn ★ Posted January 12, 2020 Share #19 Posted January 12, 2020 Once you get it open throw away that hood latch and get those hood pins that everyone put on their hot rods in the sixties. You could probably order them from an Old JC Whitney catalog.
