Ralphie ★ Posted January 15, 2020 Share #51 Posted January 15, 2020 The zombie walkers can be a big pain. Back before that, it was hell on earth to have all those obnoxious loud talkers in places like grocery lines. Thank goodness that is more of a rarity now. Sadly very deadly texting and driving has soared I am pretty happy with having an instant music player, gps, book, web surfing machine, texter, flashlight, level, compass, and sometimes even telephone in my pocket. So at any time I can whip it oot to kill time or google something, or send a quick text, etc. In high school we had a kid who constantly had his nose in a book, and for better or worse we can all now be that guy. Better in that we always have something to entertain and edumacate ourselves, but worse in it gives oot that "screw all you other bastards" vibe. Every study ever done on this has shown zero difference between the distraction due to hands free or handheld conversations. Put a block of wood in one hand, does that distract you? So why does holding the phone distract you? It's not the holding, it's the conversation. Talking to a person IN the car keeps you mentally IN the car. Talking to a person who is not physically there takes your mind partly away from your physical presence, creating the distraction. It's psychological. A cop on a radio is also distracted. But that's neccessary, and the cop has some mitigating factors.

Also the passenger is aware of the traffic and will usually stop talking when traffic gets dicey. A caller has no idea what the traffic situation is and will just continue talking even as the driver goes careening off the cliff.

Unless the passenger is my mother, in which case traffic getting dicey just generates more complaints about my driving.
