Nate Posted July 7, 2014 Share #1 Posted July 7, 2014 Alright you citified Tour de France chuckleheads...Let's see what you actually know (or more like DON'T know) about the history of this sport so here's your first question: It is a small club, those who have retired the race while wearing the Maillot Jeune so who was the first man to retire from the Tour while leading the race? What year? I'll post the next question after you idiots have twisted in the wind for a while

Nate Posted July 7, 2014 Author Share #8 Posted July 7, 2014 Gino Bartali 1938 and 1948. YES! The great Championissimo Gino Bartali was the only man with Tour wins 10 years apart... So we are still working on the first question of who was the first man to retire while in the lead of the Tour... here's another question in that theme: In 1951 Wim van Est flew off a cliff in the Pyrenees while in the Maillot Jeune. Van Est was helped back up to the road after falling 75 meters onto a narrow ledge. When he got back to the road he threw his leg over his bike, but it was then that the Tour doctor, who by now had had time to arrive, put his arm across Van Est's handlebars and said that under the circumstances, "..he could not expect that he would be allowed to continue". The picture in the papers of a teary eyed Van Est being forced into an ambulance while in the Maillot Jeune made him an overnight sensation...so: what was used to help him climb back up the cliff?
