Three stores closing

We are losing three chain stores. Our economy is booming. Kmart, Lucky's Market, and Pizza Hut are all closing up shop. We don't have a lot of chain businesses here. Most are locally owned.

Kmart is struggling nationally and closing stores every where. Lucky's just lost their financing from Kroger. Pizza Hut just couldn't compete with all of the local pizza places in town. Lucky's is the one I shopped at for groceries so this kind of blows.

We normally shopped at Lucky's when we were in Billings.  That was my wife's go to place for gummy bears. We still have a local Pizza Hut, but KMart has been gone for a long time.  ACE hardware is in the old KMart building. We actually prefer Pizza Hut to some of the local places.

All depends upon your choices.  We don't all live in touristy places.

True but all those tourist towns in my experience always have better pizza options... though you will pay more for that. Otherwise I like Pizza Slut. One of the few chain pizza restaurants that's been able to hang.

Where is Lucky’s? I don’t recall seeing it.

It's on Broadway by the Chevy dealer. It doesn't face Broadway so you could drive by it and not see it. It's kind of small, that's what I like about it.

Lucky's is a decent place to shop. Fair prices, easy to shop. I could ride my bike there. We have a lot of pizza places so I think Pizza Hut just couldn't compete. I don't eat a lot of pizza, but there are three local joints near my apt and I like all three. Kmart is just struggling nationwide. The hard thing is there is we no longer have a department store. No Target or Walmart. Maybe one will takeover this location.

I have three other grocery options. Smith's, Albertson's, and Jackson Whole Grocer. All are a little farther away and big. Whole Grocer is nice, but expensive. I don't like Smith's at all. Albertson's is okay, but big and always busy.

Maybe more people shopping online.

For groceries, it is helpful to have convenient access to a chain store plus other type of local grocery store.

Amazingly in some of the older neighbourhoods here, there are some food deserts.  I just happen to be lucky to live within 15 min. walk to 2 Safeways' and local grocery chain store.  So 3 choices given where I am cycling or walking.  A new 3rd different grocery chain store is located 25 min. away ...by walking or 15 min. by bike. It's all awesome to choose to live in the best location.

Everyone is anticipating a large national different Canadian grocery store in food desert area ...not far from city hall with condo towers housing up to 20,000 people plus historic neighborhood nearby, etc....if you can believe this for a city of 1.3 million.

I try not to think about a town of 1.3 million people.  I did not enjoy driving through your town on the way to and from the Canadian Rockies.  Our town of 9,000 people with fewer amenities is just fine for us. Enjoy!!

Really?  Traffic not as insane in city, as compared to Vancouver or Toronto.

but hey, enjoy sheepherder.  I don't drive, so it makes more sense to live where I've been.

Have one about a mile from me. Was my goto for milk...Bordens at $2.29 a gallon undercut Aldi/Walmart/Costco by at least $0.50 a gallon for their generic milk. Great produce and pretty good meat selection. Our store has only been open about a year so really sad to see it go.  Will be interesting to see what they put in there. Was a larger Winn Dixie prior which sat vacant, then split the space constructing Lucky's and Ross. Have a similar store several miles away but enroute to town called Sprouts which opened about the same time in what was formerly a Whole Foods.

Stopped by today and 25% off everything and lines were quite long.

Lucky's Market is closing

We're in a crowded suburb just outside of Baltimore and we've had a lot of retail stores close too.

We haven't had a K-Mart for several years. It's site became a ShopRite Supermarket whose chain was bought by another chain and closed it last Summer.

We once had a Lucky's Market but maybe not the same franchise. It was the size of a 7-11 and had a large and fantastic meat counter.  There was a constant line of people buying sliced meat, cheese, and salads.

We still have a Pizza Hut.  When I coached a high school indoor (winter) track team, we often didn't get back from meets on weekdays until after 9 pm. We told the parents to give their kids a few bucks and the local Pizza Hut would let the 50 of us in after closing and feed us.

Our Kmart disappeared about 2 years ago.  Just recently, the new Sprouts opened in its old location.  Kmart was on life support for a decade or so with the store always looking desperate for attention - better employees, updated shelving/flooring, more inventory, and simply better management. Instead, it got worse in all categories :(

Our local Pizza Hut - been there for decades - has its lease run out this year and already indicated it is closing and then another local pizza place signed the lease for their location, so it is a swap, but hopefully for tastier pizza.

Never had a Lucky's Market.

I'd say a "booming economy" is deceptive - especially for the lower rung of the ladder (Pizza Hut & Kmart shoppers).  You may see a booming economy as housing market going well, and stores being full, but if you rent goes up accordingly, but your paycheck stays the same, the boom ain't so wonderful.

I think all the Kmarts in Michigan have been closed for some years. I remember the blue light specials :)

My point was that these companies have bigger problems, it wasn't a local economic downturn that caused their demise.

Kroger's divested from Lucky's. They closed 32 of their 39 stores. Kroger has had their own financial problems. The grocery biz is very competitive.

Pizza Hut has too much competition.

In addition to specialists like Domino’s, Hand Fire Pizza, Pinky G’s Pizzeria and Pizzeria Caldera, there’s a long list of restaurants with pizza on their menu, including Calico Restaurant and Bar, Sidewinders American Grill, Dornan’s Pizza Pasta Company, Cutty’s Bar and Grill and Trio An American Bistro. Lucky’s and Whole Grocer also sell pizza.

“Maybe we’re over-pizza’d,” Schechter said.

Kmart has been sinking for years. Walmart and Target are crushing them on the B&M front and Amazon is crushing them online. It won't be long before Kmart/Sears is defunct.

...Sears/K-mart was sunk by some asshole corporate takeover guy who made a bunch of money looting the company, mostly for their real estate holdings.

Certainly they made some stupid decisions early on in the age of online shopping, but the company has suffered mightily at the hands of the most recent owner/CEO.
