Good luck with that. I don’t know if I would take on the challenge of swapping out a modern engine. I guess it can’t be that bad, you have YouTube to guide you now. I was 17 when I swapped out the engine in my 55 Chevy. It was a learning experience.

That's not a modern engine, it's still old enough that's it a pretty simple procedure without all the electronics that really can get you.

I had a buddy in highschool who had a 66 GMC little window pickup.  Had a 205 V-6 in it.  He blew that up once or maybe twice.  Found a 396 out of a wrecked Chevelle and we installed in that pick up.  It was scary fast.  As I recall, it was not that hard of a swap.

I don’t know how old that engine is. It looks pretty similar to the older engines but fuel injection and computers throw in another level of possible problems. Again I’m sure YouTube will be a big help.

At best this is throttle body, so not much different than old carbureted.

I don't know if you realized this but that motor is missing 4 of it's cylinders.

And if you plan on using a half of a motor would you let me put a turbo and nitrous on it.

They told Parr8 it was a four banger.  At that point, he had to buy it.

Y'all doing the swap or at a garage?

A patient that is a really good guy owns a towing company and garage.  They did some diagnostic work on the old one.  They are just going to put this one in since I just don't have time to mess with it.

This is a 1991 Toyota pickup.  Should be very simple.

LOL.  The thought did cross my mind to do an LS swap instead of the stock motor.  Probably would not have cost any more.  Maybe once G has been driving for a while.

When I was working in the factory fixing broken shit all day I got to the point where I did just needed to be done to keep the stuff on the track. But now that I have retired I'm finding joy working on motors again.

This morning I came up with a little tool to help me work on the cylinder head that I'm modafing for the Superbike. I emailed my son the details of what I made because he's doing the same modafations to his motor. I would like to fly to Georgia just to help him with his race bike but I think that he is working on some of it at his work place after hours and for some reason security won't let me in.

If you're going to put in a new 4 cylinder could I recommend one from SESCO.  They start with a small block v8 and cut half of it off and voila.  My uncle once asked if I wanted to drive his USAC midget as he didn't have a driver for the upcoming season.  I was like "do bears shit in the woods".  Womaxx was like "sit down and shut up".  One of the people we were racing with had showed her a pic of the husband going through a light pole upside down after and on track accident.  She insisted that I stick to drag racing.

Did you at least take a few laps in the car?

No.  I did get to sit in it in his garage though.  It was ultimately a funny story.  I told him I only had straight line racing experience and he told me, that's ok, you can handle power and speed, I'll teach you how to turn left.

I find great joy in tinkering when I have time.  But right now in my life, time is something that is in pretty short supply.  I love these trucks.  I would really enjoy stripping one down and rebuilding it some day.  About an 82 model.  Once the kids are gone I may try to find one to play with.  Or I may just take this one from G when he is ready for something newer and cooler.

@BR46 if I would have waited a few days, this would have been available!

You would be better off just picking a 350.  If you are going to go 454, you might as well bite the bullet and go hellcat and call it a day.

You know the question that hasn't been answered.  How did your Ford do once you took the good engine out of the back?  Did it make it home without breaking after losing it's helper engine?

Ha!  Nice. It managed to pull itself all the way home?

If I were going to do 350, would probably just put a modern LS motor in it. Plenty of power, extremely reliable, boring as shit.

No bigger than that truck is.  Just a standard 350 would be more power than you would ever need.

Honestly, a small ecoboost would be really interesting in one.  Not sure how hard it would be to adapt one from a Focus into that, but that would be an interesting combo.

Of course if it was mine, I'd want it stock because they are reliable as hell, flat simple to work on and the biggest thing to me, an original old car is so much cooler and more interesting then the current restomod trend that has destroyed so many classics.  Driving old cars, should be an experience, often a bad one, but an experience and that's what makes them cool.

In that year would a 2JZE fit?  (Toyota Supra engine 2000).  That would be impressive.

Yes. It’s quite a popular swap.

yep. Hence me wanting to put the OG motor back in.
