Online Fingerprinters

The latest version of Firefox Browser has some new protections.  Twice this week I have gotten a message from Firefox that it blocked "Fingerprinters" on Yahoo Finance pages.

Their info link (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/trackers-and-scripts-firefox-blocks-enhanced-track?as=u&utm_source=inproduct#w_fingerprinters) says this:

Fingerprinters

Fingerprinters collect settings from your browser and computer to create a profile of you. Using this digital fingerprint, they can create a unique profile of you to track you across different websites. When your privacy settings are set to Standard (the Firefox default) or Strict, fingerprinters are being blocked.

These are some of the characteristics of your device and browser that fingerprints can collect:

  • Extensions you use
  • Operating system and model of your device
  • Screen resolution and language
  • Information about your network connection
  • Fonts installed on your computer

I've tried to complain to Yahoo, but it's "contact us" tree leads you to predetermined topics that don't address your complaint.
