Airehead Posted February 21, 2020 Share #1 Posted February 21, 2020 So, I absolutely have bigger things to worry about but how many xrays of the same body part is too much. Einstein has had at least three chest X-rays every day since last Saturday. Plus yesterday he had 5 and has already had two today. doesn’t this seem like. Lot? I heard some of the radiology technicians have a higher rate of certain cancers. I can't remember what it was....
bikeman564™ Posted February 21, 2020 Share #3 Posted February 21, 2020 I thought aboot that too. I've had many chest x-rays...16 if I counted correctly. And I've had 4 CT scans and 1 PET scan. I don't know anything aboot lifetime exposure and how many medial images we're okay with. But it had to be done.

donkpow Posted February 21, 2020 Share #5 Posted February 21, 2020 While the risk exists, imaging systems use far less energy than they used to. Digital imaging systems use much less.

2Far Posted February 21, 2020 Share #7 Posted February 21, 2020 He's a pilot, he got 10x (Made up internet number) the radiological dose of a chest xray every time he left the ground. 1
Parr8hed Posted February 21, 2020 Share #8 Posted February 21, 2020 Ha! No. Modern ones use far less. Shit's all digital these days. It's a risk/benefit thing. He should be far on the good end of that spectrum. 1

maddmaxx Posted February 21, 2020 Share #10 Posted February 21, 2020 Has to be balanced against the risk of not having xrays. On the other hand, Z rays are dangerous.
Longjohn Posted February 21, 2020 Share #11 Posted February 21, 2020 I have a friend who’s granddaughter developed a blood disease that comes from having too many MRIs. I’ve told this story before. It’s a Chuck Norris story.

late Posted February 21, 2020 Share #13 Posted February 21, 2020 I wouldn't worry about it. You can get cancer from drinking water. But at that point the odds are less than one in a million. And something will eventually get you, does it matter if it's 50 years later? Here's some perspective, after we nuked Japan, Japan set up a study to track the health of the survivors. It's still going. Konnichi wa.

Popular Post Longjohn Posted February 21, 2020 Popular Post Share #16 Posted February 21, 2020 Lol, ok she came down with this blood disease that is very rare but is always caused buy too many MRIs. They searched for a treatment for it but there was only one place in the country that had a treatment for it. The treatment place was in Texas. They talked on the phone with that hospital and they could help her. The problem was the treatment was extremely expensive and she didn’t even have the finances to even get to Texas. She resigned herself to the fact that she was probably going to die from this. That’s when she got a phone call from some woman she didn’t know. The woman said she heard you have this blood disease and I want you to have the treatment. She said she would pay for it. The granddaughter told her you can’t do that, this treatment is hundreds of thousands of dollars. The lady said I can do do this, my husband is Chuck Norris and I want you to get ready and we will fly up and get you. You can stay with us during treatment and we will cover all the costs. Don’t worry about anything. Sure enough Chuck Norris and his wife flew up and picked her up and flew her down to Texas and she started treatment. She still goes back for follow up as needed and is doing well. The Norrises continue to cover all the expenses. It turns out Mrs. Norris had this disease and she wants to pay it forward. 3 7
Kirby Posted February 21, 2020 Share #17 Posted February 21, 2020 From the Mayo Clinic website: Quote You may be concerned about radiation exposure from chest X-rays, especially if you have them regularly. But the amount of radiation from a chest X-ray is low — even lower than what you're exposed to through natural sources of radiation in the environment. Even though the benefits of an X-ray outweigh the risk, you may be given a protective apron if you need more than one image. Tell your doctor if you're pregnant or might be pregnant. The procedure can be performed in a way to protect your abdomen from the radiation. https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/chest-x-rays/about/pac-20393494?page=0&citems=10 If Mr Aire is pregnant, I hope he let them know!

But if you're super cautious, regular nuclear imaging also.

az_cyclist Posted February 21, 2020 Share #24 Posted February 21, 2020 I dont know about xrays, but I had many bone scans and CT scans between 1991 and 2005. For each of those I had to drink the tracer. in Oct 2005 I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, and had my thyriod removed. I have wondered if all those scans contributed to the thyroid cancer. My current oncologist has not ordered a CT or PET scan since 2006. As long as I have access to synthroid I can live a normal life. I have taken synthroid daily since February 2006. 1

I had X-rays of my left rotator cuff in 2015 and 2017. One of the five 1-2-stitched holes in my shoulder from the surgery that followed were for a tiny camera, so at least the 12 pictures I was given from during the surgery were not from X-rays, which I assume they used before micro-cameras. But since it was a nearly 67 year-old shoulder, I wonder if it would live long enough for X-rays to do long-term damage.

In college we used an X-Ray machine, much more powerful than those for medicinal-use, to do X-ray Crystallography and had to cover ourselves with very thick and heavy lead-lined aprons that especially protected the below-the-belt sexual regions. I was glad I only had to do it about a dozen times in junior year Inorganic Chemistry Lab and NEVER forgot to use the lead apron!

But when my friend Bob Philson told me about his granddaughter I got a lot of respect for Chuck. This was no publicity stunt and wasn’t on the news. I only found out about it because of my friend.
