Kirby Posted March 4, 2020 Share #10 Posted March 4, 2020 As cynical as I can be about politics, I still get a thrill when I'm in DC and just walk around a corner and see a famous monument. Bikeguy Posted March 4, 2020 Share #18 Posted March 4, 2020 Hopefully you have some free time during the day. For the many things you can visit at a tourist. https://washington.org/things-do-washington-dc The last time we visited DC on a vacation, we stayed at the Capital Hilton. If I recall, it was about 2 blocks north of the White House. We would plan our days to walk out to the various places we would visit, and based on where we ended up, we would walk back, or take the subway back to the hotel. We were able to see a hearing at the Supreme Court. I guess we were lucky, seating is limited and we just arrived at the perfect time. We just wanted to see the building, and when we went inside, we found out they just started offering tickets for the hearing to the public. We attended an afternoon session, which apparently, they don’t do very often. Like I said we were lucky. It was very interesting to watch how the process works.

I'll be going. https://cyclewriteblog.wordpress.com/2016/04/13/magnolia-and-cherry-blossom-cascades/ Other flowering trees too. They have an annual cherry blossom festival and international haiku competition. There are residential streets we enjoy cycling to see the blossoms. Ottawa wouldn't have as much because they are in a slightly colder region.

Just about every day at lunch when I am in the office, I walk out the front door, "randomly" pick left (N), right (S), or straight (E), and then let the flow of traffic lights determine my path. If I encounter a red light, I go left or right and keep on walking. Eventually a rhythm sets in and I find a groove. It's wonderful! Sometimes I remember to "Strava" it to recall it later. I'm jealous of the SCOTUS viewing. I've been here 25+ years, and never been to a session. It would be fun to see. 1 hour ago, Mr. Silly said: I hated the cherry blossoms when I lived in DC. Maybe you had a lot of work in Rosslyn or Alexandria? I rarely would use the GW Parkway going south out of the city, but would use it headed north. Not sure which is the GW bridge (14th st?) but feel like that is a strange traffic flow as folks head towards 395 and the burbs out that way. It has been a almost 25 years since I lived there, I should have checked first. Sorry. My office was in Alexandra on Eisenhower. I think my trek to you're neck of the city was 395 (I see it is HOV now) to GW Parkway to Memorial Bridge (or Key Bridge) into the K Street area. I don't know all the names of the various bridges here No - I'm out 66 to the Dullles Toll Road, but could take the GW parkway north and choose other options up there like 123/Chain Bridge or up to Georgetown Pike and out past Great Falls. Traffic now stinks at rush hour regardless of tourism but they did implement a lot of HOT lanes (Lexus Lanes) with more to come to help folks bypass some of it. I'm fine because I just Metro it, but I did the driving in the city nonsense back in the 90s. No way I would do it now, but we have folks in the office who do it. One year while visiting family we scheduled a private tour of the capital through our congressman. We met in his office first, then a staffer took us and another family on a really cool tour. No lines, crowds & such. We tried to get a White House tour lined up but they weren’t doing private tours at the time. It really wasn’t anything special for us, I believe they all offer this service. You can walk in and do the tour but the lines are long and you are herded along like cattle. We stayed outside the ropes and just followed our staffer as she showed us around. We also got to sit in the upper rows of the chamber which I don’t think is offered with the regular tour. If any of you (well American citizens) plan to visit DC I recommend this tour.
12string Posted March 4, 2020 Share #34 Posted March 4, 2020 Cherry Blossoms will probably be really early this year. No matter when, just don't drive in that city. It's walkable, the Metro's great. You could spend most of a day at Mt. Vernon, and get a great perspective on the time period and slavery. They've kept it very authentic to Washington's era, so no Coronavirus but they have a couple early 1800's diseases you can try. 1

The only cycling infrastructure they had when I was riding around there in the early '70's was the special room full of old, donated bikes at the Salvation Army warehouse store on Rhode Island Avenue, and some bike racks at the library at U Md. My buddy who lives in Silver Spring took me on a ramble using a lot of the bike trails in and around DC the other day. It was fun to see that eastern side I had never ridden before which is a newer trail.
