Popular Post TrentonMakes Posted July 14, 2014 Popular Post Share #1 Posted July 14, 2014 I think it was March when I started ordering stuff to get this running again, after it pretty much spent four or five years sitting in the basement. A defective rear shifter sidelined me for longer than it should have, but on Saturday I finally got it pieced back together; a few tweaks Sunday morning and she was once again road-worthy. Other than the blue bar tape it looks the "same as it ever was". Therefore I present the 1980-ish Panasonic DX-2000, size 70 (though I'm pretty sure they called it a 27" when it was on the sales floor). This is essentially the same frame as the bike I bought new in 1987, which was stolen from the train station in '95. It's a mishmash of Shimano components, including the RSX front shifter and the Sora rear shifter. I did not realize the Sora shifter doesn't have its own barrel adjuster; I wish I'd realized that going in. It has a giant gel seat, and SPD pedals. Made of "1020 Steel", it's old enough that it lacks any braze-ons. A bit of an asymmetrical look from the front but I don't notice it when I'm riding. It is the most comfortable bike I've ever been on. Yesterday's ride demonstrated that I need to tweak the rear derailleur adjustment a little, and the brakes seemed to loosen noticeably during the ride. And the other take-away is that, when I first built this bike, I opted for the double chainring - but I certainly wouldn't have minded having a 30T yesterday, as I spent a bit of time in the 39x28. Really happy to have her back.
jsharr ★ Posted July 14, 2014 Share #2 Posted July 14, 2014 Dang, what NBA team do you play for? How is the weather up there? What size shoes do you wear? That is all I have for now, sorry. Oh, and nice bike.

jsharr ★ Posted July 14, 2014 Share #5 Posted July 14, 2014 I like how you incorporated your big deck into the picture so that we could not ask if the rumor about tall guys having huge decks was true. Well played, sir.

TrentonMakes Posted July 14, 2014 Author Share #8 Posted July 14, 2014 Are you really 6' 12"? The honest answer is: I used to be, but now I measure 6-11. Apparently my back and/or my knees have given in a little over the years. My shoes are 51s though I wonder if I should be in a 52.
Road Runner Posted July 14, 2014 Share #9 Posted July 14, 2014 I don't think I've ever seen a steering tube that long.

TrentonMakes Posted July 14, 2014 Author Share #11 Posted July 14, 2014 Like I said, in '87 I bought a bike this size off the sales floor at an LBS (Klarsfeld Cyclery, on Central Avenue in Albany). I miss those days; custom is the only way to go to get a bike this size nowadays. Technically I probably should have longer crank arms (these are 175s). jsharr ★ Posted July 14, 2014 Share #14 Posted July 14, 2014 sharp looking bike. 63-64 cm maybe? I am pretty sure it is a 60 actually. Falcon of England Europa, Reynolds 501 main tubes. Bought it at a garage sale for $10. Rebuilt it with a 105 drive train and the Alex rims off my Trek. Before. It already has the Alex wheels on it in that pic, otherwise that is how it looked when I bought it. Had Wolber Super Champions on it when I bought it.

LoneWolf Posted July 14, 2014 Share #17 Posted July 14, 2014 Makes me think of one of the club guys that rides a custom 70cm Serotta. You should check on Ebay for the other RSX shifter. You'll find them around.

You'll find them around. ooh... a custom Serotta.... ::drools:: I got the Sora shifter on ebay - a new Sora was cheaper than a used RSX, and 8-speed road stuff is harder to come by... but I guess I found out why the Sora is cheaper. Also have to get used to the thumb lever for upshifts, but I'll get there.
LoneWolf Posted July 15, 2014 Share #19 Posted July 15, 2014 Heck, it makes my head tube seem small (63cm) and my buddy's (he's 6'9" and rides a 64cm). But yes, the Serotta one of the guys in our club rides --you'd swear the head tube is the size of a seat tube on a Terry --or any bike that'd fit PetitePedal.
