Road Runner Posted March 14, 2020 Share #1 Posted March 14, 2020 I had some deli style garlic butter that sat in my fridge for a year or more. It was still probably okay to eat, but it was way past the date on the container, so I decided to get rid of it. It was a sizeable chunk about 3" square by 1" deep in a plastic container. I wanted to recycle the container, so I just threw the chunk of butter out in the back yard. I figured critters or the weather would soon take care of it. That was about a month ago. Today, it is still there.

Longjohn ★ Posted March 14, 2020 Share #3 Posted March 14, 2020 Some critters don’t like garlic, regular butter would be gone by now. I keep about a month’s supply in the fridge, the rest I keep in the freezer.

So that "garlic repulsing" thing really works! I thought that was just for bats and vampires.
Razors Edge ★ Posted March 14, 2020 Share #5 Posted March 14, 2020 I used whipped for toast and similar, and stick for cooking. I go through the whipped fast enough that I don't worry about expiration, but the stick butter is always at, near, or beyond the date before we finish it. I have no idea what the real "expiration" - ie unsafe or nasty tasting - date would be. It still seems to smell and taste fine after a few months in the refrigerator.
Page Turner Posted March 14, 2020 Share #6 Posted March 14, 2020 ...you can freeze stick butter and it lasts a very long time in that state. Thaws out fine. Butter goes rancid if you keep it too long in the fridge, and it tastes "off".

I guess my taste buds finally forgot. That was some government surplus butter that my parents got during a six month strike where my dad worked.
