Remember that brat who sued her parents?

I think she was attacked by her lousy boyfriend and she wants to be safe.  Going to court for a restraining order is not unusual.  Going to court when there are reciprocal restraining orders is SOP.  The fact that a news organization is making a big deal out of it is not unusual either.

This is the second time she'd handling a problem (or a perceived problem) in a way which brings her a lot of media exposure. By doing so, she is earning a reputation which could haunt her in the future.

People of your ilk are the ones causing the problem now. Filing for a TPO should not bring her any media attention or public scorn.

American newspapers tend to publish a lot more court results than Canadian newspapers publish. Out here we don't do much with routine court proceedings, but I've seen plenty of American papers which include such things as part of their coverage. It's one of the differences between the media cultures in our countries.

That said, this particular restraining order likely would have attracted some attention if it had happened here, simply because of the woman's earlier lawsuit. Her initial action has changed the way she is perceived today.

But If the media wasn't making this a story, how would any of us know about it?

In Destinstion's words:

"That said, this particular restraining order likely would have attracted some attention if it had happened here, simply because of the woman's earlier lawsuit. Her initial action has changed the way she is perceived today. "

The media made her lawsuit a story, and now they are making the TPO a story too.

Sometimes an event which would normally go unnoticed will be a huge news item.

A guy checking into rehab isn't a news story — unless he happens to be the mayor of Toronto, who had been denying he had a substance abuse problem. A teen arrested for impaired driving might get a few lines in the police report — unless his name is Justin Bieber. At that point, the story is covered around the world.

Or, in a slightly different direction, consider Monica Lewinsky, whose name is still a household world, nearly 20 years after her sexual encounters with Bill Clinton.

Choices have consequences.

When Rachael Canning sued her parents, she gained a lot of attention. Rightly or wrongly, that decision will haunt her for years to come.
