My cat  laughs at such an idea.  She'ls picky about exactly what flavors of fancy cat food she'll deign to eat.

You can go visit Mine the Bird, a long shot winner from 2009, is living a nice retired life in New Mexico.  You can feed him peppermints when you visit.

  9. Kirby's post in Do you think DH is intimidating and scary? was marked as the answer
No, I find her exceedingly kind and caring. and Impressive in her commitment to the things and causes that matter to her.  I might be "scared" if I was competing with her, because I expect she'd beat me in almost any competition, but I think she is a wonderful friend to have in your corner.

  12. Kirby's post in What kind of surprises do you guys give to your wives/girlfriends on Halloween? was marked as the answer

  13. Kirby's post in No bookshelf behind this person. was marked as the answer
Particularly during the work from home era, analyzing the book shelves behind people has become quite the hobby. There are a number of twitter accounts dedicated just to analyzing people's bookshelves.   It's clear some people have put quite a lot of thought into arranging their backgrounds.  I agree this woman seems like she's spent more time on her work than her background.
  14. Kirby's post in Who pissed off Kirby? was marked as the answer
No wonder I'm pissed.  My bike is missing a wheel and doesn't have streamers!!!!
  15. Kirby's post in I feel more cynical than usual lately was marked as the answer
My Mother used to tell an old family story about some relative of her father's (I think an aunt)  who would come to visit them in the summer.  This relative was named Bertha and Bertha was quite willing to let  my grandmother do all the shopping, cooking and cleaning and generally wait on Bertha.  Bertha's  one attempt to help was when after the meal was finished and my grandmother was picking up the dirty dishes to wash them all by hand, every so often Bertha would bring in a big dirty serving dish that my grandmother had momentarily left on the table while she cleaned some other dishes and made room in the kitchen.  Bertha would come in with the dish which then required my grandmother to stop what she was doing and try to make room for the dish by the sink and Bertha would say with a satisfied tone "Here, you missed this".
So whenever someone in my family would offer a suggestion, or take some action, that was utterly unhelpful and only created more work for others we'd say sarcastically "Thank you, Bertha".
I get the feeling this Scout Dad is really a Bertha.
  16. Kirby's post in Paging all participants to the emergency medical phone. was marked as the answer
My insurance subscribes to an online service that literally has doctors available pretty much on call.  You can also see the doctor's name in advance so you can check their credentials before selecting them.   It's not useful for a lot of conditions, but it might work for this sort of thing.  My old insurance also had a nurses' hot line where you could call someone for free and talk to them.
  17. Kirby's post in Happy Anniversary! was marked as the answer
I hope everyone has had a festive anniversary day.  I have to watch that I don't drink too much festive punch tonight, I've got to work in the morning.
  18. Kirby's post in Do you think Paul McCartney is happy? was marked as the answer
New England Motor Freight.  Actually her parents own it, but she's active in the business and has been on the Board of the NYC MTA for years.   Pretty sure it's just a matter of time until Sir Paul is hanging around truck stops chatting up Myrtle the waitress and trying to get the Burly Man breakfast special but without the sausage.

  21. Kirby's post in I LOVE the Salvation Army red kettle bell ringers was marked as the answer
When Superstorm Sandy hit the region, my town was out of power for a number of days.  The Salvation Army set up in a big condo complex that has a big population of the elderly and served hot meals, hot drinks and set up cots.  I never went down there but a number of my neighbors did, and one elderly lady who lives nearby really was thankful for the help.  I've appreciated what they did to provide practical support for the elderly in the community (they were the only organization who really did anything to help people in town), so I always donate when I see one of the bell ringers.
  22. Kirby's post in Why is it so hard to find a onesie in my size was marked as the answer
It's hard to find clothes that fit when you're head and body are combined in one big circle.
  23. Kirby's post in How do frogs vomit? was marked as the answer
Politely, of course.  And don't call me Shirley.

There actually is a video of a frog vomiting on youtube, but frankly, it was too disturbing to link.  It brought back too many memories of wild nights at the lily pad.
