  1. ...and it may bode well for future bike manufacturers if they can be competitive on cost and quality to the Chinese frame factories. An Ibis frame from Vietnam will be the lower end version of the same bike with a US made frame. Lower spec build + lower manufacturing costs = lower priced bike that shares a lot of DNA with it's pricier (and often over-the-top) sibling. Offered in either Bug Zapper Blue or Cheat-O orange, the Exie will be avaialble in three build kits ranging from $4,999 to $5,499. Those that are wanting a frame-only will have to upgrade to the Exie USA. Complete builds of the Exie USA will continue to be sold for $7,999 to $12,799.
  2. ...but not by me or ! Talked to Bob ( @Parsnip Totin Jack knows) at Trek, and we discussed options - me building , him building, etc. - and decided it was quickest and easiest to have the pro do it. He did it and I picked it up a while back but just realized I hadn't posted about it. For starters, the rim is all carbon. It is also slightly lighter than the old Zipp. And it is SIGNIFICANTLY wider. When I mounted the 25mm tire and tried to fit it on the bike, I realized a brake adjustment was in order. I had the carbon-specific pads in the narrow width, but even with those pads, there was a paper thin gap when open. By redoing the brake set-up, I got back to a much more "normal" gap and progression to the braking feel. On rides, it is funny to hear the brake noise - almost a hum - versus the normal brake noise (not much noise). It rides well, is built up a bit more sturdily, and I think it looks good. Now, I need to put some heat to the front wheel and remove the Zipp decals to create a little balance between the two wheels. Also, I might see if, with the wider rim profile, a 28mm tire will fit in that rear. With the narrower Zipp, a 28 creates a bit too much "bulb" and the rub risk is high, but maybe not on a wider rim.
  3. ...that the electronic shifting powered the battery, eh? The patent in question (US 20220355900 A1) details a bicycle derailleur that incorporates an energy-harvesting system. The first few paragraphs mention one of the drawbacks of current electronic derailleurs; the inconvenience of having to recharge the battery, with the inherent risk of it running out of juice whilst out on a long bike ride. Those lucky enough to own an electronic shifting drivetrain will know this all too well; perhaps not so much because they’ve run out of charge mid-ride, but more likely because they’ve forgotten to re-charge the battery before heading out for their next ride. One can imagine the frustration. SRAM’s patent published last November describes a self-charging derailleur that would eliminate this issue, meaning its owner would no longer have to fret over the charge state of the battery.
  4. this was a fun day of riding on ice. I think this was 2016 or 17. I'm using this as of of my wallpapers. I change them up. I'm in the green /yellow

  6. Lance would check into a hotel anonymously under the name Juan Pelota. Juan sounds like one, and pelota is spanish for ball And Juan Pelota Cafe is the name of his coffee shop at his bike store
  7. Last weekend was hot and humid, and I mistakenly thought I could find more shade & stay cooler riding gravel vs the road. Anyway, I was wrong about that, but it did have me enjoying - among other things - the "horse" trail that runs parallel to our paved MUP for most of the distance out to where I can hop on true gravel roads in Leesburg. This is maybe 7 miles of the probably 13 miles of that horse path at 2x (no one wants to see me puttering at 15mph), so I also get the Alvin "chipmunk" sound going I think I passed under a dozen folks on the gravel - no cyclists - compared to hundreds I would have encountered 20' away on the paved bits.
  8. ...leading up to my ride. It was a holiday and I had the whole afternoon to ride. And then reality hit me in the face. Or, a steady headwind from the west did. I cut my losses at 30 miles and came home to my toasty (relatively) house.
  9. Looks like his wife is riding his old team 'dale lucky (Napoleon dynamite voice)
  10. is riding up Haleakala...and Ted did it IIRC didn't some one here or the LF ride up this? Anywho, how freaking cool.
  11. I know some of you get bothered by dirty bikes. Mine got a little muddy on today’s ride.
  12. I always tried to hit the speed limit on my way to work before entering the tunnel on my way to work. This guy takes it to a whole new level.
  13. Razors Edge

    FINALLY!

...and in time for the new cycling season (TdU starts soon!), GCN+ has released a Apple TV app, so I no longer have to run the app on my phone and push it to the TV. This is GREAT news. And, if you haven't subscribed to GCN+, you should.
  14. I went for a ride with some friends yesterday that started over at their area. With the truck, I just put my bike in the backseat - with the wheels still on. No need to remove the front wheel (like in my Accord's back seat) nor attach the hitch rack (if I wanted to leave the wheels on). Open back door, put bike in, close door and head out. Wow. Makes it REALLY easy
  15. ...as a mellow beer to enjoy. Gotta love local beer and fun comics.
  16. Included Frankie Andreu I got to freaking ride w/ a pro, albeit for a few miles. This is the First Dozen ride in Dearborn, MI. It's been held for just over 50 yrs, and one of my favorites. Anywho I finally rode w/ him for a bit We chatted before the ride. Says he's been riding a lot. Zwift too. I don't do that though. He asked how I was doing & such. Really nice guy. Anywho this is a 12 mile ride, and he was casual for first couple miles at 12 mph. Then he bolted I did too, but he went from 12 mph to probably 20 in a flash. He's fast. Closest I got was couple hundred feet behind them and maintained the gap for a few miles. 18-19 mph. But w/ a couple lights there was no way for me to get to them...oh well. The few guys he was riding w/ seemed like his riding buds, the way they were chatting and carrying on Welp, I can check this off the list. I would like to get a ride together w/ him and a friend of mine this summer perhaps. That be fun.
  17. One of the best winter comic strips!
  18. @az_cyclist Seen this on Strava. Couple people I know did it. Hear of it? The peeps I know randonneur all the time. This 187 mile ride was a qualifer for something called Paris-Brest- Paris 2023.
  19. I'm sure @dennis can appreciate it, and @MickinMD can appreciate the historical stuff. I've got a few new routes mapped out - one that takes me pretty close to Unison, VA. The story (and this video) isover a year old, but made my local news recently and obviously ties in well with the growth in gravel riding. and another related one: https://videopress.com/v/4eGqMLXd
  20. I stumbled upon this dude's video. These are trails I ride a lot of. Pretty cool.
  21. Where would you get the gift card from. This is for a friend who has her first road bike. Einstein helped her select it used but in great shape. She has risen one season and has done a few tris. She is a swimmer come biker. need a gift card for her.
  22. Two-day winner, Sean McShane has ridden his bicycle across New York State.
