You would think the strength requirements of the belt would not be so great that they couldn't come up with a sufficiently strong connector so the belt can be split instead. That said, I think a properly designed frame with a break in the stay is not such a bad thing. Also, while I haven't seen mention of it's purpose being for belt drives, the asymmetrical raised stay on the drive side of the Trek Stache means the chain/belt does not need to be broken to fit through the frame.
