There were a couple times that persevering paid off for me, financially, career-wise, and in personal satisfaction. But I also know people who should have realized their limits and crashed and burned because they took on financial risks they were not prepared to handle or career challenges they were not suited to manage. One example was a school science department chairman/chemistry teacher who sought and accepted promotion to an assistant principal and the barrage of discipline problems, poor parenting, and other stresses that came his way led to a quick retirement.
