sheep_herder ★ Posted August 27, 2019 Share #1 Posted August 27, 2019 Just curious, after reading an article of some folks in western Montana that used one and were rescued after a freak storm caused a lot of tree blow downs that trapped them out in the wilds. REI has some info on these sorts of things, but surely depends on how many bells and whistles one needs/wants.
sheep_herder ★ Posted August 27, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted August 27, 2019 I assumed he might have one. I have a neighbor that is interested. He is often out in the boonies flying his falcon, and may be soon moving way out of town.

I would think it is pretty much a required piece of equipment if folks back country ski alone or in small groups or do a lot of hiking in rocky and more dangerous secluded areas. If you're alone and break a leg, it is much nicer to push the "Help" button than to hike out for several days.
dinneR ★ Posted August 27, 2019 Share #5 Posted August 27, 2019 I have the inReach mini. It does what I need it to do. I use it mostly for bikepacking.
dinneR ★ Posted August 27, 2019 Share #6 Posted August 27, 2019 The alternative is the Spot X. It's a little less expensive. The keyboard probably makes it easier to send a message, but the reviews are not as good as the inReach. Neither device is terribly intuitive. https://www.findmespot.com/en/index.php?cid=666 Comparison of the two: https://www.outsideonline.com/2304301/differences-inreach-mini-vs-other-satellite-messengers
