jsharr ★ Posted August 10, 2021 Share #1 Posted August 10, 2021 This made me think of Allen, then Ringo Starr and finally Wilbur. @Allen, have you ever been stationary in a glider due to headwind? Is it possible to go backwards in a glider? @Wilbur do you ever fly gliders? 1

Allen ★ Posted August 10, 2021 Share #3 Posted August 10, 2021 I haven’t been up in the glider for years, but yes, I have my glider ticket. Still part owner of my brother’s glider—just don’t fly it. Yes, you can go backwards in an airplane. Hard to find the conditions, but very possible. If the headwind exceeds your forward speed you are going backward over the ground. That glider is in ridge lift. Think of a river flowing over a stone. In a kayak you can surf the wave of water and hold stationary in the river. The glider is doing the same thing in the air flowing up and over a mountain. Often in the J3 Cub the headwind would be strong enough to reduce our speed to less than the speed of highway traffic. Look down and the cars are passing you.

Freaky No. A stall is when the air flow over the wings is too slow to provide sufficient lift to overcome gravity. The glider is not stalled because the air is still moving over the wing at a good clip.

If you are in a stall the nose will drop on its own, which increases increases wind speed over the wing, and you can return to level flight. To exit ridge lift one simply turns.
