Not understanding ChatGPT

ChatGPT: Lawyers says AI tricked them into citing bogus case law | CTV News

Just stupid they didn't literally check if the cases even existed at all. However there is alot of lazy research or total lack of or not even understanding authoritative sources on the 'Net. Everything is on the Internet for free access.

No.

It is not. Publishers are out to make money. All kinds of ways. You will not find national full technical standards for free. YOu will not find for free, the National Building Code of CAnada or National Fire Code of Canada either.  Alot of the specialist subject research areas ...locked out until you pay for access.  Electronic publishers are probably concerned who else will grab their content without any contract.

You will not find detailed legal analysis on all sorts of court cases on open internet. Not good enough for court applications filed by a lawyer.

While some of us do have a good grasp of mammoth databases and back-end structures,  how content is funnelled through, tagged (some of it automated while some not) and how search engines work, there's a ton of people that never had that knowledge. So we can't expect to even understand what ChatGPT does to spit out an answer.  So easy to scam, lie to many folks. More misinformation. Great.  I want to believe the world is promising and even brighter.

So the smarter robots become, then humble human needs get smarter ...in a targeted way.

ChatGPT basically is capable of understanding questions in the form of sentences and the it searches, at very high speed, the same sometimes-right, sometimes wrong information a Google search finds.

OpenAI's CharGPT site has a disclaimer saying the app is sometimes wrong.

For example, it claims the 1st Ranger Battalion was the Ranger unit that landed in Sicily in early 1943.  Actually, original 1st Battalion of Darby's Rangers had been expanded to the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Ranger Battalions before the Invasion of Sicily.  My father was promoted from corporal to platoon sergeant and moved from Company F, 1st Rangers to Company C, 4th Rangers as veterans were spread among the new battalions.  It was the 400 men of the 4th Rangers, alone, who landed under heavy fire at Gela Sicily and, with light weapons and naval artillery, captured the entire town, blew up dozens of tanks, and captured over 1200 Italian Prisoners and many Germans in one day.  ChatGPT basically says they weren't there!

ChatGPT is not encouraging development of  critical analysis unless you make it like a trivia contest...ChatGPT vs. human.  Really it's robot vs. human.
