What is the significance of calling the club "The Sharrow"? Is sharrow a thing?

Ja, Sharrow is a thing, the name of the area of Sheffield where the club met. There's a grand picture of them meeting at the Pomona, a public house, for a group ride. That pic is displayed in a new pub called the Sheaf Island, in the same area. The Pomona no longer exists.

That's a good question, Thom, but I have no idea. I bet though it was a great many miles in a great deal of tweed.

You know what? That's what you'd think, but it ain't so. I have tweed breeches as well as full trousers, I climb, walk, cycle, no chafing.

For heaven's sake, they got nearly if not actually to the top of the world in 1924, in tweed. I bet it was Yorkshire tweed at that.

So Sheffield doesn't have tweed?

That's closer to the bottom. I orient the world based on where I am - Washington DC, so that's far from the top.

I've never heard of Sheffield tweed. Sheffield is all about steel & iron; wool is a West & North Yorks thing.
