So an Icebreaker owned by Shell was in Portland for some repairs in drydock. This is red meat for the protest culture here in puddletown. The icebreaker is headed to Alaska and the artic to help in the drilling. Last night 13 Greenpeace protesters hung from the only bridge out of town. They were going up & down on their lines. I addition there were kayaks in the river below This am about 9:00 am the ship went out and stopped just short of the bridge. Then turned around and went back to drydock. Shortly thereafter a judge in Alaska issued Greenpeace a fine of $2500/hour. Escalating (doubling) at regular intervals. Of course one of our Senators got on the radio blaming W for the artic drilling. Tonight the City mayor sent out a statement opposing drilling. He pretty much has to do this (considering the protest environment here) About 4:00 pm LE started in on the hangers. 2 of them elected to go down on their own after some tugging on their lines. the 3rd one had his line secured by LE and then cut. LE then lowered him down to a patrol boat. All 3 cuffed and stuffed. The 3 were in the center. Enough of a gap to get the ship through. Then the ship started out from drydock again. And the kayaktivists got engaged. There were probably 50-60 canoes & kayaks out. About 10-15 LE boats with a few personal motorcraft. The LE for the most part nudged the kayaks over to the side. arrested a few. Saw one (woman?) slap at LE in a boat w/her paddle. The big ship pulled up. Stopped then slowly moved through the chaos. I was impressed by the skill of the LE on the boats and watercraft. they were really manuervering well in a tight messy environment Of course the activists are having a party celebrating victory tonight
