  1. I made it for a full hour on the trainer last night. My thighs are actually sore this morning. Riding the trainer isn't as interesting as riding outside, but it's a lot easier to ride to maximize a workout, not dodging cars and stopping for red lights and coasting. Pedalpedalpedal the whole time.
  2. I love this post. welcome Danielle, and thanks for fixing our site.
  3. That is a tragic story. Suppose I shoulda read the link first, before making a snarky comment.
  4. Wait - is that the violinist from the Peter Gabriel video?
  5. happy birthday BR46 and Rattlecan! hope it's a great day!
  6. She's easy on the eyes, for sure, but I'm not sure she's as beautiful as that orchestral arrangement. I love that.
  7. this. You already go above and beyond, SW.
  8. Some 30-year-old perspective on the issue. Not sure why it doesn't say "Bloom County" at the top.
  9. bah. It isn't even the best prog-rock song with "Red" in the title.
  10. Indoors on the trainer is different. Riding outside my mind is always occupied by watching the world go by, and watching out for killer cars. On the trainer in the dark musty basement, I put on some music to keep me going. I can still get lost in thought. But maybe I'll try riding on the trainer in silence too.
  11. When I was younger I used to try to find a way to bring music with me, but it never worked very well. Nowadays I feel the same way you do. There's also the issue of needing to hear when cars are approaching, but even with them taken out of the equation I'd opt for the silence.
  12. Growing up we had an established patch of rhubarb and I used to do the same thing. Haven't had rhubarb (or strawberry rhubarb) pie in forever - in the spring I will cook down some rhubarb with sugar and put that on vanilla ice cream. This maple-pecan pie sounds amazing. I have had pecan pie very few times in my life.
  13. Cycling does indeed make me happy, even when I'm not treated to a view like that (which is never). With the weather and the kids' activities I'm not riding much lately. I'm finding that makes me a little unhappy.
  14. James Brown is a thousand times better than Skrillex.
  15. Since you asked - my daughter and son are both healthy, smart, well-adjusted and well-behaved, and they both still enjoy spending time with their dear old Dad. I am insanely lucky. Our daughter is 12-1/2 and at almost 5'-4" she's an inch taller than Mom.
  16. While I've been losing weight through diet and aerobic exercise, I suppose I should also be doing some core strengthening and developing my abdominal muscles. I suspect that stronger abs would help take some of the load off my back (which has been bothering me a little lately, and I have had more significant episodes in the past). What do you do to work abs? When I was in high school, basketball practice often included a session of lying flat on your back with your hands at your sides, then keeping your legs straight and raising your feet to about a foot off the ground, holding for some period of time. Is this still useful?
  17. Upstate NY? you mean like Yonkers? #itsallrelative
  18. Monday morning weigh-in was 255.5. Still making progress. This morning I'm wearing a tie for the first time in a while... now I need some new shirts because this neck is really loose. I might go down a whole inch.
  19. I stopped by Captain America's house once while I was out on a ride. He lived about five miles from our first house. Nice family... hope he's doing OK.
  20. Same as almost always... peanut butter on whole wheat, banana, pear, apple, yogurt, granola bar. I have some almonds and raisins for snacking. oh, and one small cookie. The apple had a bad spot on it and I cut it off, but the whole thing tasted musty and nasty - tossed it. Those were important healthy calories.
