My wife's old Schwinn is hanging in my garage still waiting on me to figure out a wheel build for years now, but it's still there and I'd never think of getting rid of it.

Good point.  Since they were having a yard sale and he was doing the selling of their old junk what kind of discussion did they have about the sale? Did she know he was going to do it? If so, how much responsibility was hers to tell him -either then or earlier- that she wanted to pass on her bike to their granddaughter?
