That’s what I saw, too, but I also saw him slide down to close the door to keep an attempted pass from happening. So I don’t know what the “rules” are about such a block? I see that the injuries aren’t life threatening/

Then cold. Then wet. Then warm. Then really wet. Saw 20 laps on Sunday. Couldn't stay for Monday. Had fun anyway. A lot of PBRs were consumed. :-)

Was the crash the fault of the injured driver, or the guy who spun him into the wall? It looked like there was a clear effort by the lead drive to cut off the lane the lower car tried to take, which makes me think it was the fault of the guy who crashed, but I don’t watch much motor sports. It's not really either. Breaking up the airflow that allows the following cars to overtake the leading car is part of superspeedway racing. Pushing the car ahead of you to take advantage of the aerodynamics of two engines and one aero drag is part of superspeedway racing. Yes, Newman moved over to be in front of the fastest following car. Yes that car began to push him, at that point to help him win as a Ford team driver because the pushers chance was gone. Unfortunately, pushing is a complex task that has to be done very well to avoid disaster. This time it didn't work out so well. Still the crash from the push, hitting the wall and going upside down would have probably been ok as the cars are really built that strong. It was the second crash when Newman's upside down car was struck my a following car that had no chance to avoid him that did the real damage. By some lack of luck the following car actually hit Newman's car directly in the upper corner of the drivers side of the roll cage or basically right through the drivers window which was upside down at that time. It takes a bit of a freak crash to do that sort of damage to one of the modern stockcars. The second hit is always into a frame/cage that has been somewhat damaged by the first. No matter how hard one tries one cannot live in a bubble at all times. 4
maddmaxx ★ Posted February 19, 2020 Author Share #54 Posted February 19, 2020 Very good news today. There is a picture of Ryan Newman in the hospital, standing with an arm around his kids. Don't know what that means but I really didn't expect to see him upright this soon.

Thank you, this is the part that I didn’t really comprehend, that the low car was a) there to help and b) out of contention itself for the win. It seemed like he was trying to pass at the bottom of the track, and was blocked leading to the crash.

He was blocked before the crash and left with little choice but to push the leader and hope for second.

In motorcycle racing it never ends well. The video of this crash is no longer on YouTube. Steve Rapp ran into the back of his team mate and ended up going over the handle bars at 100 mph. Steve got up ran back to the pits and got on his backup bike and finished 7th.

Sure, he could have won the race, but crashing, remounting, and finishing in the top 10 seems pretty good to me.
