How many of you remember the "Paul McCartney is dead" rumor, started by some disc jockeys on the radio, that claimed the Beatles were secretly revealing it through songs and album covers?  The rumor was begun after the Beatles band had broken up.

In the picture of the Beatles walking across Abbey Road, Paul being the only one barefoot was supposed to be a clue.

At the end of the song "Revolution Number 9," the words "number 9" are repeated over and over and if you play it backward you supposedly hear, "Paul is dead, Paul is dead ..."

They must have created a couple dozen pieces of "evidence" despite the fact that, by that point, McCartney had his own band, "Wings." was seen in public often and the joke was, "What do you call a dog with wings? ... Linda McCartney," an accurate commentary on Paul's wife's looks.

The rumor sure sold a lot of old albums and maybe that was the purpose.
